Name: Rick Gosling
Roll on the Committee: Co-Club Captain
How did you get involved in MRC?
I grew up locally but only played school rugby. A lot of my schoolmates played at Manchester but my family were at Wilmslow (boo). Once I started an office job and immediately put on a couple of stone, I realised I needed to do some exercise and I came down with a mate who was an ex-M&J (Mikey Williams). That was 8 years ago!
What makes you stay in rugby?
I’m not sure my relationship would survive me being in the house an extra 2 nights a week and every Saturday! I love all sports but nothing else offers the combination of camaraderie, physicality and skill development that rugby does. As for MRC specifically, I’ve met some of my best friends here and I love being involved with a club that has such a rich history and track record of producing top level players.
Biggest achievement/proudest moment in rugby:
Personally, playing 15 1st XV games in the season we last got promoted to level 6 was a huge achievement. Moving in from the wing to be entrusted with the 2nd XV fly half spot this season is a close second and testament to the ability of the MRC coaching staff!!
Vision for the future of Manchester Rugby Club:
In the next few years, I’d love to see the Men's 1st XV get promoted and consolidate their place in the league above. We have some of the most successful M&Js sides in the North West and a fantastic women’s team so ensuring we continue to create an atmosphere that means the younger players want to continue with the club after school/university is key to future success.
What do you do away from rugby?
For work, I’m a financial advisor. Socially, when I’m not at the club I’m usually playing another sport. I’m a very average footballer and golfer and ran a half marathon last year but vowed never to do it again at around the mile 4 mark. I’m a very keen skier and a chalet in the alps is the pipe dream.
Quick fire answers:
Favourite food: Anything cooked on a BBQ
Favourite film: Tombstone or Sicario
Professional club supported: Sale Sharks. My better half is now becoming hooked and recently had her hen party there so can hopefully get to a few more games.
Who would play you in the film of your life? I’d like to say Tom Cruise. However, it’s way more likely to be the bloke that plays Simon from The Inbetweeners.
Pet peeve: When you have been stood at the bar for ages and then someone arrives and gets served immediately.
Advice for new players: Make the most of the coaching resources available to you, we’ve got a set up that other local clubs will be very jealous of.
Advice for those wanting to volunteer: Since joining the committee, I’ve come to appreciate how much goes in to running the club and how much time some individuals give up. So, if you are thinking about it then put yourself forward, there will definitely be some way you can help out and it will be gratefully received. Plus Seb (my co-club captain) will buy you a drink!
